Determining Your Hair Type
  • Hair care starts from knowing your hair type. The hair can be classified as dry, normal or oily according to the amount of oil that the sebaceous glands produce. Another consideration is the diameter of the hair shaft, generally categorized as fine, medium, or coarse.

Beware of Hair Offenders
  • Blow dryers, hot rollers and the sun can cause split, dry ends and breakage.

  • Avoid products that contain harsh ingredients, artificial colors and fragrances. All-natural product is the best choice, e.g. Paul Penders Shampoos and Conditioner.

  • Product with formaldehyde should NOT be used.

  • Be aware of products containing polysorbate 80 as they may be contaminated with the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane.

  • Conditioners with quaternary compounds (benzalkonium chloride, cetrimonium bromide, quaternium 15, etc.) for thickening the hair can be irritating to the eyes and skin.

  • Avoid shampoos with aggressive cleansing ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), DEA, TEA.

Be Smart in Hair Care
  • General speaking, oily hair should be washed every one or two days and less oily hair might be washed once or twice a week. If you shampoo everyday, lather only once, even if you have oily hair. Over-cleansing can create a vicious cycle of stimulating oil production and drying out the hair.

  • Not everyone needs hair conditioner. People with long hair may need only to apply the conditioner to the ends. Permed, colored, highlighted or otherwise chemically treated hair should be conditioned on a regular basis.

Hair & Nutrition
  • Protein: Too little will result in dry hair that grows slowly.

  • Fatty acids: A deficiency can thin and dry hair.

  • Vitamin A: A deficiency or excess will cause hair loss.

  • Vitamin H (Biotin): A powerful vitamin for hair growth. It is found in most beans, fish, whole grains (especially brown rice), egg yolks and livers.

  • Never eat uncooked egg as it contains plenty of avidin that interferes with the absorption of vitamin H.

  • Increase consumption of food like gingko and ginseng that stimulate blood circulation.

  • Eliminate refined sugars and dairy products from the diet to reduce dandruff.
